“We are proud to announce that todays marks the publication of our first data set,” said Charles Auger, General Manager of Stationnement de Montréal. “We believe this data will enable companies and organizations to provide new on-street paid parking services to citizens.”
Here are a few examples of how this data can be used:
- Positioning on-street paid parking spaces
- Positioning on-street and off-street pay stations on maps
- Identifying spaces featuring a bike rack
- Matching a parking space to its relevant regulations and schedule
For example, the PRKNG app, launched last July and created by Samuel Mehenni and Arnaud Spuhler, two entrepreneurs from the first cohort of smart city accelerator InnoCité MTL, is a practical application of Stationnement de Montréal’s data. Indeed, this app, which enables users to see when and where they can park for free, find nearby parking garages, as well as pay using their smartphone, used our data to outline regulations.
“We are thrilled with Stationnement Montréal’s announcement, as the organization was the first partner to answer the call for open data,” said Harout Chitilian, Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee and in charge of information technology, smart city initiatives and administrative reform for the City of Montréal. “The implementation of smart city, economic development and transparency processes will gain its full impact when the City and all its partners open their numerous data sets. Over the upcoming months, we will strive to have other organizations join this movement.”

Overview of the City of Montréal’s Open Data Policy
On behalf of its citizens, the City collects and manages data for its internal operations, among other uses, which represents a major information asset for all parties. This policy details open data governance and accountability regarding its application. The City adopted this policy to detail each of its administrative units’ duties pertaining to open data and inform citizens of their data access rights. The policy applies to all of the City’s administrative units, including boroughs.
